Availability & Prices, click here Tignes is one of Europe's finest ski resorts, and is the highest in the French Alps; meaning great snow!
Along with Val d'Isere, Tignes makes up the huge expanse of the 'Espace Killy' ski area, which [apparently] is so big that
if you put all the pistes end-to-end it would reach from London to Manchester!
Travel & Getting there: This site is brilliant for travel information: http://www.tignes.co.uk/travel.htm Fly:
(Then bus or drive from airport).
Geneva (3hrs drive from airport to Tignes),
Lyon (3hrs), Chambery (2hrs) or Grenoble (3hrs). We recommend http://www.flybe.com, http://www.easyjet.co.uk.
Snow train:
Eurostar from London, to Paris, and then on to Bourg St Maurice! Brilliant.
Then bus or drive 30mins to Tignes.
Transfers:
Private minibus, very nice folks: http://www.thecoolbus.co.uk/
Car Hire: http://www.holidayautos.co.uk,
Bus: http://www.altibus.com/,
Train: http://www.voyages-sncf.com.
Parking:
Beware: park illegally and they’ll tow you! There are two car parks:
one directly outside our apartment (the entrance to which is by the roundabout). This is super convenient,
but your car is exposed to the elements (I have previously had to call the French AA due to extreme cold, so watch out if
it’s super cold/snowing).
The second is called Parking du Golf, and is back up the hill i.e. nearer to where the Interhome offices
are. This is undercover. (but Du Golf is a bit of a walk from the flat, 5 mins or so – which feels far longer if it’s
snowing!)
General Useful Info to know:
Opening hours:
Opening hours are odd. Shops are usually open from around 9/10am till midday, and then again from 4/5 until
7/7.30.
Renting gear:
although there are several rental outlets between Chalet Club and the ski lifts, all of which are fine,
our recommendation would be for a shop called ‘Black Cats’, located in the upper part of Val Claret.
Whereas stores such as Twinners tend to get people in-and-out fast, collect your cash and give you mediocre
service, the folks at Black Cats take time ensuring you have the correct kit, I've been genuinely really
impressed. Prices for rental are pretty consistent throughout Tignes, an therfore we recommend Black Cats.
People staying in our apartment are entitled to a 20% discount on rentals from Black Cats (mention us when
you go in).
Buying lift passes:
you can buy your pass either at the Tourist Information office, which is between the Interhome office and
Parking Du Golf, or, more easily, just go to the ticket office by the lifts and Funiculaire (come out of apt, turn left, and
it’s between all the lifts). There’s a photo booth at the ticket office, in case you need a passport photo for
your pass.
Piste maps:
We have one map framed in the apartment for quick viewing, you can pick up free piste maps in most ski shops
around town, at the Tourist Information Office (between Parking Du Golf and Interhome) and in the ticket office by the Funiculaire.
Buses:
there’s a free bus service that runs between the various Tignes villages, and Val D’saire. The
buses are most used by people who are not lucky enough to be staying in Val Claret and therefore need the bus to get to the
lifts – you just have to fall out of the front door! But, the bus is useful if you want to head to Le Lac or elsewhere
for the evening, (but check on when the last one runs, it’s a cold walk home!).
Lifts:
As Val Claret is on the mountain, the village has an upper and lower part. Upper is more handy for restaurants
and bars, lower is better for piste access. There are two lifts (regular lifts, not ski lifts) linking upper and lower Val
Claret (fortunately equidistant either side of Chalet Club). Turn left or right out of the apartment, look for signs saying
‘Ascenseur’: I believe to the left the lift is called ‘Ascenseur de Bollin’, and to the right look
out for ‘Ascenseur de Platineres’. These are useful to save you negotiating a snowy slope between the buildings.
Eating:
The upper part of Val Claret has around half a dozen good restaurants, particularly recommended are; Brasserie
du Petit Savoyard and Le Grattalu.
Cashpoints:
There are two in Val Claret, both are in the upper part of the village, one is in the corner of the
courtyard between shops (opposite Black Cats), the second is in a small shopping arcade (near to the Tabac and Cheese shop).
Pharmacy:
There is a pharmacy between the Tabac and the Interhome office.
Bars/Nightclubs:
Crowded House (for sport on TV), Yorin FM café, Blue Girl Discothèque, Melting Pot.
Petrol:
Nearest fuel is in Le Lac by the mini roundabout, but this is expensive, it gets cheaper if you can make
it to Bourg St Maurice.
